Caduet (amlodipine besylate / atorvastatin calcium)
Approved by the FDA in late January 2004, Caduet was approved as a dual therapy
medicine for the simultaneous treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Caduet is actually the first medicine to treat two different conditions in a single
pill. Caduet contains both Norvasc (amlodipine besylate) for the treatment of
high blood pressure, and Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) for the treatment of high
cholesterol.
In clinical trials, Caduet was well tolerated by patients has been administered
along with a variety of anti-hypertensive medications, including beta-blockers,
thiazide diuretics, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI). The
most commonly reported Caduet side effects were fluid retention, headache, dizziness,
abdominal pain and weakness. These side effects were largely characterized as
mild to moderate.
Caduet is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component
of this medication. Caduet users should promptly report to their doctor, any
tenderness, muscle pain, or weakness, possible signs of serious side effects.
